Production of precious and non-ferrous metals is growing in Kazakhstan

In physical terms, the production of refined unprocessed copper amounted to 327.3 thousand tons, 73 tons of gold, 661.9 tons of unprocessed and semi-finished silver, of which 653.8 tons of refined silver (according to energyprom.kz.).

Among the regions, more than half of the production of noble and non-ferrous metals falls on two regions: East Kazakhstan (576.4 billion tenge) and Karaganda region (562.3 billion tenge).

The largest production volumes fall on the enterprises of the KAZ Minerals Group and Kazzinc LLP.

During the pandemic, KAZ Minerals managed to avoid significant disruptions in production and sales. In the first half of 2020, the company produced 153.8 thousand tons of copper, which is 4% more than in the first half of 2019.

The highest productivity was shown by Aktogay GOK in the East Kazakhstan region - 67.6 thousand tons of copper in the first half of the year, at Bozshakol GOK - 60.4 thousand tons, at the enterprises of the Eastern region and the Bozymchak mine in Kyrgyzstan - 25.8 thousand tons of copper.

However, KAZ Minerals is expanding its copper production capacity following the completion of a second concentrator at Aktogay. Its launch is expected at the end of 2021, and it will double the productivity of the GOK and achieve copper output up to 170 thousand tons per year.

Projects in the field of mining and metallurgy and metallurgy occupy the main share in the loan portfolio of Development Bank of Kazakhstan JSC (hereinafter - DBK, Bank, subsidiary of Baiterek Holding). The share of projects in metallurgy and mining and metallurgy is 30.3% (one third) of DBK's loan portfolio.

Last year DBK opened a credit line for KAZ Minerals to implement a project to expand Aktogay GOK in the amount of $ 600 million for up to 15 years.

The Bank's cooperation with KAZ Minerals began in December 2016, when the Bank allocated $ 300 million to complete the construction of the Aktogay GOK. At the end of 2017, the enterprise reached the design production level, after which it was decided to build a second concentrator to double its capacity.

In 2017, DBK, within the framework of the SPIID program for 2015-2019, opened financing for Kazzinc LLP for the construction of the Zhairem mining and processing plant with a capacity of 5 million tons of processing of polymetallic ores per year. The loan amount was 33 billion tenge for a period of 7 years with a total project cost of 400 million dollars. Kazzinc LLP is the largest zinc producer in Kazakhstan and the world, engaged in the production of not only zinc, but also associated metals such as copper, lead, silver and gold. The main production facilities of the company are concentrated in the East Kazakhstan region.

Also, in order to increase the export of Kazzinc LLP products, the Bank provided loans on preferential terms under the Nurly-Zhol program in the amount of 17 billion tenge for a period of 3 years for the production and export of zinc metal.

It should be reminded that the "threshold" for financing investment projects by the Development Bank of Kazakhstan is currently 7 billion tenge, for the food industry - 3 billion tenge. The minimum loan amount for export operations is 1 billion tenge.
