The Almaty Region is a major agricultural and industrial area that significantly contributes to Kazakhstan's economic development. Almaty, the largest metropolis in the country, is a hub for advanced technological projects. Ten major projects in energy, the agro-industrial complex, food industry, and mechanical engineering have already been implemented here with the support of KDB.
In the energy sector, KDB’s portfolio in these regions includes the construction of the 50 MW «Kaskelen» solar power plant, small hydroelectric power plants, the «Abay 2» wind power plant in the Sarkand District, the modernization of the Almaty CHPP-2 to transition to gas, the construction of the Moynak hydroelectric power plant, and the Nurgisa 100 MW solar power plant (repaid).
For example, financing the construction of the Moynak hydroelectric power plant was a crucial contribution to Kazakhstan's energy security. The plant meets the energy needs of a fifth of the region's population and was one of the first major energy projects built since independence. Overall, the increase in "green" projects in KDB’s portfolio demonstrates the Bank's commitment to sustainable development and responsible investment principles.
In the food industry, notable projects include RG Brands Kazakhstan, a major exporter producing bottled water, natural juices, lemonade, and other non-alcoholic beverages such as Sunny, «Gracio, Da-Da, Pepsi, Mirinda, 7Up, Piala cold tea, Lipton Ice Tea, and A'SU water. RG Brands is showing positive export growth and plans to increase overseas shipments. This year, KDB, in partnership with Nurbank JSC and Bank CenterCredit JSC, signed a syndicated loan agreement to expand the company's production capacity and increase exports to the Uzbek market.
Another major player in the Almaty region’s food industry is Maslo-Del, which produces and exports dairy and oil-fat products with over 280 product names. Recently, Maslo-Del has increased its exports by more than eight times, with the value of exported products rising from 2 billion to 17 billion tenge. KDB supported the company's pre-export operations by providing a loan to purchase oilseeds for the subsequent production of 20,000 tons of vegetable oil destined for foreign markets.
AsiaAgroFood, the largest producer and leader in syrup, animal feed, and bakery flour production in Kazakhstan, is another significant player in the agro-industrial complex, expanding its presence in foreign markets. KDB financed the purchase of raw materials (wheat, corn) for processing and export.
In the mechanical engineering sector, a strategic project was the construction of a Hyundai passenger car manufacturing plant in Almaty (Sonata, Elantra, Santa Fe, Palisade, Staria, i30, Tucson). Supported by KDB, this enterprise has increased domestic car production in Kazakhstan and strengthened the export of local vehicles. The plant now produces tens of thousands of new Hyundai cars and is deepening localization efforts.
In total, these enterprises employ around 7,000 people and have paid approximately 14 billion tenge in taxes.
